Red Bull will produce its own engine for Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri from 2022, but it cannot be ruled out that this engine will be 'sold' to another party. Even Alfa Romeo could be an option.

Will Red Bull sell the engine?

Honda will be leaving Formula 1 at the end of 2021, but not quite yet. The engine will still be used by Red Bull, who will now build it themselves and rename it the Red Bull engine. This is certainly still a possibility, but Formula 1 journalist, Joe Saward, also sees options for other parties.

''Red Bull can now go to another manufacturer and sell the engine for the next few years. The engine is still called the Honda engine in 2021, but there is no reason why Audi or Alfa Romeo can be on that engine from 2022 unless Honda has forbidden it in the agreement'', says the journalist at Autoweek.com.

Alfa Romeo and Red Bull?

''The new Stellantis group is working to accommodate their sports programmes and they are also looking at what they want with Alfa Romeo. The contract expires with Sauber, on which they hardly make any marketing gains. They use the Ferrari engine and are mostly at the back of the grid. If they buy the Red Bull engine it will give them a lot of marketing profit for very little money. In addition, Red Bull can then recoup some of the costs they have incurred.''

According to Saward, however, there is also another way in which Red Bull could recoup the money. ''There is also a possibility that they sell their engines to other teams. Think of Aston Martin, with whom they have a good relationship. They might be interested in buying those engines and being allowed to rename them to Aston Martin engines'', concludes Saward.
