Ferrari covers itself in advance: 'That is already a very ambitious goal'

Ferrari need to repair the damage from 2020 in 2021, after last season was disastrous. However, Laurent Mekies is already covering for the fans, and doesn't know what is achievable in the coming season.
Ferrari covers itself
With a scaled back engine and a chassis that wasn't suited to it, Ferrari fell way back in 2020. The Italians finished sixth in the Constructors' Championship, which is not a place where the historic team belongs. Fans expect Ferrari to bounce back in 2021, but sporting director Mekies is covering his bases.
''2020 was very difficult for us and fighting for the world title in 2021 is therefore unrealistic. Ferrari however has the ambition to return to the top and fight for the world title'', says Mekies in a video call with the Scuderia Ferrari Club fans. Ferrari is mainly aiming for 2022, but also hopes to make steps in 2021.
Mercedes the favourite
''The goal for 2021 is to show that Ferrari, despite almost completely frozen regulations, can win back positions. That would already be a big deal. Beating teams in the midfield is a very ambitious target we have set ourselves for a complicated season. 2022 is the real chance to make a leap forward.''
So while Ferrari is normally supposed to be competing at the front in Formula One, Mekies now points to other teams as the favourites. "Mercedes is still ahead of Red Bull, despite the fact that we have seen perhaps the worst season start in seven years from them,'' the Ferrari top executive concluded.
