Provisional starting grid GP Imola: Verstappen vs Hamilton gets new chapter
- GPblog.com
With qualifying for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix behind us, the F1 paddock can start looking forward to the official race, scheduled for Sunday. Lewis Hamilton will start from pole position for the 99th time. He has a Red Bull Racing driver next to him. This time it will not be Max Verstappen, but teammate Sergio Perez.
Behind the Mexican, who stats on the front-row for the first time in his long career, are Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. The third row of the grid is for Pierre Gasly and Daniel Ricciardo. The Australian again qualifies ahead of his teammate Lando Norris, although this time it's mainly because the Brit's fastest lap was taken away from him.
Vettel and Alonso disappointing
As a result, Norris will not start from P3, but from seventh place, together with Valtteri Bottas. The Finn looked very strong in Q1, but due to problems with his Mercedes car, an eighth-place was the maximum. Rounding out the top ten were Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll, both of whom managed to beat their experienced teammate. Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso will start from P12 and P15 respectively.
In the bottom ten spots, Yuki Tsunoda stands out. The young Japanese driver parked his car in the wall at the beginning of Q1. He is obliged to start from the last spot and it could even become a pit lane start if it turns out that Tsunoda has damaged parts, which will need to be replaced. In that case, Tsunoda will have to start the race from the pit lane.
