Max Verstappen triumphed in the Monaco Grand Prix and stood on the Monaco podium for the first time ever. The victory was also special for Honda. The engine manufacturer won the race for the first time since 1992 with Ayrton Senna.

Special victory

Masashi Yamamoto, executive director of Honda's F1 project, said on Twitter Honda's executive director of the F1 project, said he was delighted with the victory in Monaco. "This is one of the most important and historic races on the calendar and part of the motor racing triple crown."

It is the seventh victory of the Japanese in the principality. Between 1987 and 1992, all editions of the Grand Prix were won by Honda. "The last time Honda won here was in 1992 with Ayrton Senna and I am sure this first win here for Max Verstappen is very special for him," Yamamoto said.

Leaders in the championship

Verstappen's win and Sergio Perez's fourth-place now put the team on top in both the drivers' and constructors' championships. "This is only the fifth race in a long season. So now we will do our best to maintain this position race by race and we hope Honda fans around the world will enjoy supporting us in our fight to be world champions again."
