For the first time in his career Max Verstappen leads the drivers' championship in Formula 1. But according to Paul Di Resta this could have happened earlier and Lewis Hamilton should be happy with the red flag situation in Imola.

The red flag in Imola

Things could have been very different if Hamilton wasn't helped by the red flag in Imola. Just after he spun off the track on the Italian circuit and had to go to the pits for a new front wing, the red flag was shown. This allowed him to score 19 points in the end, as he was able to fight his way back to P2.

"Where this championship could have been if Hamilton hadn't been lucky with that race in Imola when it was red flagged when he had that off, and then to fight back," Di Resta revealed to Sky Sports F1. "Mercedes have had a disaster and then, more importantly, they've lost the Constructors' Championship lead and that was very much a team effort."

Happy faces at Red Bull

The former Force India driver is thoroughly enjoying the battle between Red Bull and Mercedes. He believes Red Bull will be happy to leave Monaco having taken over the Constructors' lead.
