After six years in Formula 1 with Toro Rosso, Renault and McLaren a dream came true for Carlos Sainz; driving for Ferrari. In Monaco, Sainz scored his first podium for the Italian team, but that's not all as far as he is concerned.
Fantastic opportunity
After two excellent seasons at McLaren, during which he finished sixth in the championship twice, he managed to convince Ferrari to offer him a seat alongside Charles Leclerc. When it was announced that Sainz was moving from McLaren to Ferrari, the Italians were struggling and McLaren was the better team. Many people thought that Sainz had made the wrong choice. Sainz however was sure of his decision.
"When I saw the opportunity to go to Ferrari it was fantastic," Sainz told La Gazzetta dello Sport who reveals in a video that he can speak a good word of Italian. "We all had red cars at home as kids, but when I met [Michael] Schumacher in Barcelona I realised Ferrari was something special."
Good feeling at Ferrari
Sainz has now completed five races at Ferrari and feels at home there."The feeling with the team is very good, I integrated quickly. I'm not yet at one hundred percent with the car, I still think too much while driving. At the moment it's not yet possible to drive a perfect race every time, but that's what I want to do."
After finishing second in Monaco, Sainz is seventh in the championship with 38 points, just behind Leclerc. However, Sainz's ambitions are a lot higher. "I want to become the best driver in the world. That's what I'm working for and that's why I'm at Ferrari."
