Max Verstappen has managed to grab his second pole position of 2021 for the French Grand Prix. At the Paul Ricard circuit, which has been labelled 'Mercedes country' in recent seasons, the Dutchman dominated. The Red Bull Racing driver is more than happy with his qualifying.

"So far it's been a very positive weekend at a circuit where it's normally quite difficult for us," said the 23-year-old Limburger in conversation with Paul di Resta. Friday still got off to a rough start for Red Bull, but some changes worked out well. "Yesterday in VT2 there was actually a turning point for us and today it went even better. To take pole is obviously very good."

Yet Verstappen remains cautious. He knows his big title rival is next to him on the front row of the grid. "There are no points to score today, but it's a great day today. We have to finish it tomorrow. We want to take those 25 points we lost in Baku. Hopefully, we will continue to perform at this level."

Also in terms of long runs, things are looking relatively positive with the RB16B. Verstappen is looking forward to Sunday. "Yes, actually he is. The car felt good. I'm looking forward to it," he concludes. The competition comes mainly from Mercedes, who easily won the last editions in France.
