Lewis Hamilton will remain a Mercedes driver in 2022 and in 2023. The team announced on Saturday in Austria that the record-breaking champion has extended his contract by two years. Now the big question is who will take his seat next to Hamilton.

Lewis Hamilton will stay with Mercedes until at least the conclusion of the 2023 season. The British driver has won six of his seven titles with the German team and is currently locked in a Championship battle with Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing

Hamilton, who will turn 37 before the start of next season, signs this contract much earlier in the year than last time. Contract negotiations were delayed in 2020 and he only announced his stay at the team just before the start of the season.

Happy partnership

Hamilton and Mercedes have produced one of the greatest driver/team partnerships in the history of Formula 1. He joined Mercedes for the 2013 season, after spending six years at McLaren where he won one World Championship in 2007.

At Mercedes, Hamilton has gone on to win 77 races and secured 74 pole positions. His second-place finish in last week's Styrian Grand Prix pushed him over the 3,000 points mark for the team.

This contract signing means Hamilton will remain on the grid when the rule and regulation book gets a rewrite over the winter. In 2022 the cars will be radically different. The team are balancing this preparation with their current Championship fight with Red Bull.
