Max Verstappen is in contention for the world title with Lewis Hamilton this season. Whereas the Englishman had an advantage in the early stages of 2021, the Red Bull Racing driver is now 32 points ahead of his rival.
The Dutchman won again convincingly in Austria on Sunday afternoon. Verstappen set the fastest lap of the qualifying session and never relinquished his leading position. Hamilton did try to get closer to Verstappen, but the seven times world champion had to give up early due to a defect in his car.
Verstappen fights for world title
Verstappen told the press conference he was happy with the lead over Hamilton, but he also realises the season is still long. "I’m enjoying it, but I’m also focused on the rest of the season. It is still so long and there are still a lot of points you need to score. We need to make sure that every single weekend we are back up there and we basically use the whole potential of the car."
In Austria in particular, Verstappen had a big lead over his competition. "I think it was just very dominant, but we have to make sure that in Silverstone we are there again and that’s what we will look into now again to make sure we are very competitive there."
