Mercedes is obviously worried about the gap in the world championship. The German team has been unassailable in Formula 1 for the last seven years, but this season they face serious competition from Red Bull Racing.
While Max Verstappen hasn't had the car to challenge Hamilton in recent years, the Red Bull car of 2021 is very competitive. Hamilton was able to build a commanding lead in the world championship in the early going, but in recent weeks Verstappen has slowly started to pull away from his rival.
Victory in France and two wins in Austria increased the lead to 32 points. Mercedes came no further than second and fourth in Austria. "It's not the end of the world," Wolff stated in conversation with Sky Sports F1. "When you see how satisfied the guys from McLaren are with their second position, we can honestly learn something."
Difficult season at Mercedes
The Mercedes team boss sees his team struggling. "We have to admit that this is a difficult championship. It is a Formula One world championship. Then we should not expect to win everything just by driving away for a while."
