Aston Martin has watched Mercedes climb from a midfield team in 2010 to title winners in 2014. The British marque is also hoping to contend for titles itself in four to five years' time, although team boss Otmar Szafnauer hopes to be on board with the new regulations as early as next year.

Competing for the title as quickly as possible

As the cars will change completely to create a more level playing field, Szafnauer is hoping for a chance to compete for wins and maybe even the title next season. "We are working hard on next year and we will do our best to win the world title next year, but if you look historically, it does take time to put the infrastructure in place, the people in place to be able to challenge for a world championship," Szafnauer is quoted by RACER.com.

"Even Mercedes — who bought Brawn, who were world champions — it took them another four years to win," Szafnauer continued. The team boss admits that the 550 staff the team now has is far from enough. "We have to hire like-minded individuals, quite a few of them, probably another 200 until we are right-sized."

Title fight in 2022 unlikely

There will be no shortage of ambition at Aston Martin, but a chance of winning the title in 2022 seems unlikely. Currently, the team is sixth in the Constructors' standings in which it is in a fierce battle with AlphaTauri and Alpine. Sebastian Vettel's first podium for the iconic brand has been the highlight of 2021 so far.
