Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes have struck a major blow in England in the battle for the world championship. Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing left Silverstone with zero points, while Mercedes scored a total of forty.

Red Bull Racing bruised

Mercedes are only four points behind Red Bull Racing after the British Grand Prix. In the drivers' battle, there is only eight points between Verstappen and Hamilton. So we could go into the summer break with a new leader in the championship. Mercedes engineer Andrew Shovlin doesn't think it will be that easy though.

"Silverstone is one of our best circuits, so it would be naive to think that we can go to Hungary and expect to repeat this performance," Shovlin said to Motorsport.com. "Red Bull will be good at this circuit with a lot of downforce - to be honest, they are good at every circuit at the moment - and they will be a bit bruised after the experience in England, so I am sure they will come back strong."

Leading into the summer break

With the differences in the championship so small, Mercedes would be only too happy to take back the lead in both drivers and constructors in Hungary. "We're about halfway through the championship, the margins in the points are very small and we're going to do everything we can now to try and get in front."

Shovlin agrees that it would be great to go into the summer break at the top of the championship. "That's probably the goal we set ourselves, but it's a stretch goal. We showed in Silverstone that anything is possible. You just have to keep going, try to get better and try to improve. Red Bull is a difficult team to beat, but I think we are a strong team and we will do everything we can to try and win."
