The fact that Fernando Alonso likes to be in a racing car every moment of the day, is obvious now. And that is why it seems likely that when his Formula 1 career is over, he will drive the Le Mans 24 Hours for Alpine.

Alpine has had a presence at Le Mans for some time and will be on the grid with one car in the Hypercar class in 2021. The team is now evaluating whether to build a new Hypercar or LMDh prototype for the 2023 or 2024 season. According to CEO Laurent Rossi, Alonso is one of the best choices to bring in as a driver.

Why Alonso is a good fit for Le Mans

"He is one of the biggest ambassadors of the Renault group in motorsports and it would only be natural for us to carry on beyond F1, god knows when beyond F1 means for him," Rossi said to Motorsport.com. It won't be the first time Alonso has been at the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He drove for Toyota Gazoo Racing in 2018 and in 2019, winning the race both times.

The car that Alpine is competing in this year at Le Mans is theoretically not allowed to compete in 2022, which means the team has to create a new car: "It could be LMH, it could be LMDh: I am looking at it with a very positive, keen eye," revealed Rossi, who is strongly considering building a new prototype.
