It could be another month before we know who will sit alongside Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes in 2022. Team boss Toto Wolff has admitted though he wants things settled by September.

Choice in September?

There are two major candidates for the seat: current driver Valtteri Bottas and Willliams driver George Russell who is a Mercedes academy product.

"We have to choose between stability of Valtteri and the talent of George, where the future lies. I want the matter to be settled in September so that they can both position themselves well for the coming season," explained Wolff to Bild.de.

Bottas not as strong as hoped

Bottas is having an inconsistent season. The Finn has yet to win a race and is nowhere near able to give Hamilton the backing he needs - he is fourth in the championship. Russell, on the other hand, regularly rises above his material and managed to score his first points for Williams in Hungary.
