Fernando Alonso was widely praised for his performance in Hungary, holding off Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes lap after lap. Suggestions that the duel could be compared to the one between him and Michael Schumacher in 2005 have been waved away.

Some have compared the Hungarian duel with the one between Alonso and Schumacher at Imola in 2005, where Alonso outperformed Schumacher's faster Ferrari and fought off attack after attack. However, the Spaniard believes that the duels are not comparable.

Alonso says duel with Hamilton not comparable with Schumacher

"Schumacher was three or four tenths faster at that time. Hamilton had an advantage of one and a half seconds with the car and about one second with the tyres, so he had an advantage of two and a half seconds," Alonso explained to DAZN.

The Alpine driver therefore expected Hamilton to pass him much sooner, but noted that he kept choosing the wrong lines. "He kept making the same mistakes in the last few corners. I was waiting for him to take the last corner normally and overtake before the first corner, like he did with Carlos. He should have done the same with me, but he kept making mistakes," the two-times world champion said.
