Sergio Perez made a costly mistake on his lap en route to the grid Sunday afternoon. The Red Bull Racing driver slid off the track and was unable to return his RB16B to his team under his own power. The Austrian formation still managed to repair his car when the Belgian Grand Prix was postponed, but it ultimately resulted in zero points as the race never resumed.

His seventh starting position was converted into last place, as Red Bull had violated the rules of the parc fermé during the repairs. No points for Perez.

Perez blames himself

"I did a mistake. Conditions were incredibly hard," Perez told Sky Sports afterwards. "I just went into the kerb and lost it and did a mistake that was so costly. The guys did an incredible job to turn the front end around. We changed the rear wing of the car and were ready."

Opinions within Formula One are very divided on awarding half points when there hasn't even been any real driving. However, Perez believes the points for Verstappen are deserved. "You need to reward the people that did a good job yesterday," he said.
