Another Belgian Grand Prix this season? Hamilton and Verstappen disagree
- GPblog.com
Spa-Francorchamps is for many drivers a highlight of the season. The circuit is for many drivers on the list of favourite places to race. That is why it is even more disappointing that exactly this Grand Prix could not take place due to the weather.
Back to Spa for extra race
During the press conference, Autosport asked how the drivers would feel about coming back to Spa one more time this season to replace one of the races that was cancelled due to corona. Provided that logistically and contractually that can be arranged of course.
Max Verstappen, winner of the shortest Grand Prix ever, isn't too keen. "We already do too many races, so we have to choose the right circuits, of course first of all the good ones, but to come back here now, I don't see that happening, especially when you already have 22 races."
Free race for the fans
George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, unlike Verstappen, see it as a possibility. "If we had to have a replacement race, I wouldn't mind coming back here," Russell says. "It's obviously one of the best races and circuits in the world and obviously there are so many fans who probably love Formula 1 and live nearby or in Belgium who haven't had the chance to see what they came here for, so maybe that could be another way of paying them back for losing today."
The latter is also decisive for Hamilton. After the race, he already let it be known that the fans were entitled to get their money back. An extra race at Spa would then be a nice solution. "I would definitely come back. I love this place, so if we can find a time when it's not raining and we can give the fans a free race, that would be fantastic." On the comment about the rain, Russell hooks up. "We would never be able to race at Spa if we were looking for a time when it wasn't raining."
