Wolff responds to Horner: "Would never block someone like Albon"
- GPblog.com
This Friday was not only about the first two sessions at Zandvoort but also about statements concerning the future of Alexander Albon. Horner said earlier that he hopes Mercedes will not block a possible move by Albon to Williams. Wolff has since reacted on that.
Speaking to formula1.com the Austrian says he will not oppose a possible seat for Albon at Williams. On the contrary. He hopes that the driver will soon regain his place in Formula 1 and he can be a key player in this season's seat race.
"I think at the moment it's all about Alexander Albon who, as Christian says, deserves a place. He's a really good guy, and he's probably the main player in the musical chairs."
Where does the future of Albon and de Vries lie?
That's not certain yet, but it's clear according to Wolff that both drivers deserve a spot in Formula 1. The problem is: those spots aren't easy to come by and are pretty scarce. Still Wolff will not stop a driver like Albon.
"I would never block someone like Alex Albon; he's a fantastic guy, his personality is great. I was personally sad to see him go [in 2020], and if he has a chance in a Formula One car I think that's the right thing to do. But maybe Nyck has that as well. So we have to look at the open spots at Alfa and at Williams and try to find a solution." But how likely is it that de Vries will drive at Williams next year?
"I don't know," says Wolff. "I think the great thing with Nyck is that he has two options: he has the guaranteed seat in Formula E, which is a really tough championship, and on the other hand there is maybe [a] 50/50 chance that he will be in a Formula One car."
Nyck de Vries ' future, like that of many other drivers, is likely to become clear soon.
