Mercedes has stopped developing the current car, and will therefore take more risk with the engine. According to Motorsport.it the German team is going to take more risk to test the reliability of rival Honda.

Red Bull continues to develop

With the new regulations for 2022 just around the corner, teams at some point have to make the choice to focus on the new car, rather than the current car. For example, Haas chose to focus on the new car at the start of the year, and more teams would follow later.

Mercedes too has now really stopped developing their current car, but they haven't given up hope of winning the world title. Mercedes knows that the battle with Red Bull Racing is not an easy one, especially considering the fact that the Austrians keep developing until the end of the season. Mercedes, therefore, opts for a risky approach.

Mercedes is going to take risks

According to the Italian media, Mercedes will now focus on the engine to get even more out of it. The engine has been Mercedes' strength for years, but Honda seems to have closed the gap, especially when it comes to reliability. However, Mercedes now wants to put that incredible reliability to the test.

Mercedes would like to test the turbo to see if it can be increased. Hamilton will get a new engine and will be able to use it until the end of the season. Mercedes wants to test whether Honda will make any mistakes in the hunt for that extra power with an extra boost of the turbo.

It's not without risk, however, as Mercedes is obviously in danger of getting caught in the knife as well. If the team demands more from the turbo, it could also cause reliability issues for the German team. No title rival could do without a breakdown.
