The rumour had been around for a while, but MotoGP has made it official: following Formula 1 's lead, the premier class of motor sport will introduce sprint races in 2023. There is one major difference from F1: MotoGP will organise sprint races on every Saturday of the race weekend.

Another big difference is that the result of the sprint race will not determine the starting grid for the main race on Sunday. That is still determined by qualifying. The sprint race is aimed at making the weekend more attractive to viewers, as viewing figures have fallen drastically over the past year. This may be partly due to the absence of two big names: Valentino Rossi who hung up his helmet after 2021, while Marc Marquez is struggling with a long-term injury.

The decision is somewhat controversial as, after the news was leaked in the paddock at the Red Bull Ring, where MotoGP is racing this weekend, the riders said they were not aware of it. A number of riders are unhappy with the decision, including reigning World Champion Fabio Quartararo. The Yamaha rider said so in conversation with Ziggo Sport. Other riders are happy with the new challenge: daredevil Jack Miller said he welcomes the new format.
