Wanted Newey seems ready for break after Red Bull exit
- Jeroen Immink
It is still not known where Adrian Newey will pursue his career after his Red Bull exit. The Englishman is regarded as the best designer in Formula 1, but after many years in the sport, Newey wants to wait before announcing whether he will quit or work for another team. Meanwhile, Newey himself has said he is ready for a little break.
"It wasn’t a big surprise when other teams showed an interest after I announced I was leaving, but I won’t make a quick decision about my future," Newey told The Times. "I need a break to work out if I want to have another go in F1. I also didn’t want to risk going stale," the Englishman said.
Both on and off the track, these are grim times for Red Bull Racing. The internal political power struggles between Christian Horner, Dr Helmut Marko and also the Verstappen camp sometimes cause friction, and sports-wise, Max Verstappen has to pull the cart mainly on his own due to the oncoming competition from McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari. Newey also says that this has made him see things more in perspective. "I don’t know what my future holds, but instead of dashing around the world to grand prix races this summer, I’ll be able to see my family. In June Mandy and I took our two Bernard doodles, Yogi and Benji, on a drive along the south coast for a week, which was great fun."
