Alonso blasts Monaco pitstop proposal: "Maybe you need ten, twelve"
Last year's Monaco Grand Prix was probably the least action packed race of the whole 2024 season. As such the F1 Commission met prior to the F1 75 Live event to discuss various topics, amongst which was an initiative to set a minimum mandatory number of pitstops, which Fernando Alonso has a clear opinion on.
Last year, a lap 1 pile-up triggered a red flag which gave the remaining drivers the opportunity to put hard tyres on and finish the race on that same compound, making the Monaco Grand Prix a procession which was eventually won by Ferrari driver, Charles Leclerc.
Drivers like Max Verstappen and George Russell attempted a second pitstop to try and use the tyre advantage to move up the order, however, it proved to be a futile endeavor since the dimensions and the weight of the current cars makes it nearly impossible to make an overtake on the narrow streets of the Principality.
Alonso at odds with the F1 Commission's proposal?
Alonso is often referred to as a 'real racer', thus he has been known to criticise the artificial aspects to modern racing, like fellow world champion, Max Verstappen. And so the Spaniard had a similar reply to the Dutchman's with regards to the proposed initiative.
Does Monaco need more pitstops to make the racing better? "It depends where you start," said Alonso to GPblog and other media present at the press session ahead of the F1 75 Live event.
"In the middle you need a lot. If you start second or third maybe you need one or two. If you start last maybe you need ten, twelve," added the Spaniard, before suggesting that the issue with Monaco may lie elsewhere: "It depends. I won two times and it was okay with that number of stops," concluded Alonso.
