Heavy rain fell in the South of Australia in the morning, along with more rain throughout the day, and that meant the start of the 2025 season was full of crashes and chaos.

Rookie Isack Hadjar spun his Racing Bulls car around before the Grand Prix even got underway, and then Carlos Sainz and hometown hero Jack Doohan were also out of the race after the first lap, with all of them unable to deal with the greasy nature of the track.

For Hamilton, after qualifying P8 in his first qualifying session for his new team, there was yet more to deal with thanks to the huge amounts of rain, which the seven-time world champion seemed to struggle with in his brand-new machinery.

"Let me know where I'm slow, struggling with driveability, the car is snappy," said the 40-year-old after the race got into its groove, with an aborted start occurring due to Hadjar's crash, as well as a safety car due to Doohan's heavy accident.

"Turn 11 and 12," was the response from new race engineer Riccardo Adami, who also did that job for Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz. The Italian engineer was also told off by Hamilton, telling him to "leave me to it" after informing him twice that his 'overtake mode' was back in use.
