Lewis Hamilton will not be the new co-owner of Chelsea. The top British football club has been sold to businessman Todd Boehly for reportedly just under five billion euros. The British government has yet to approve the deal, although Chelsea itself has thus already reached an agreement.

No takeover by Hamilton and co.

One of the other candidates was Martin Broughton. The former chairman of Liverpool FC and British Airways wanted to take over the football club with several people, including Hamilton and tennis star Serena Williams, but in the end they missed out. Hamilton would have put down an amount of around ten million euros.

Why Hamilton was interested in this project? "Chelsea has been at the forefront of diversity and inclusion and becoming more diverse and progressive. So it's not that we associate with the previous owners. Our goal is to continue some of the work they've already done, have even more of an impact and get more involved in the community."

Chelsea was owned for many years by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, but after the invasion of Ukraine by President Vladimir Putin, it had become impossible for him to remain at Chelsea. All of Chelsea's assets were also frozen, making it impossible, for example, to travel by plane to matches or to sell single tickets for fixtures at their own stadium.
