Croft's issue with Verstappen: 'The thing about Max...'
Max Verstappen 2024 season was a complicated one, which saw him go on the limit several time, both on track, as well as on the radio. Sky Sports commentator, David Croft, in Autosport International, has stated he has an issue with the Dutchman in those situations when he 'does what he does to win' championships.
"The thing about Max, is that he does what he does to win and to be a champion," started Croft, later adding that Red Bull Racing were paying to do just that, so he ultimately doesn't have a problem with the Dutchman on that front.
However, after that he shed light on where exactly he takes issue with Verstappen's approach. "Now I do when he goes too far and when we saw in Mexico for instance, the two incidents with Lando [Norris] there. Then I've got a bit of a problem with it," following up with the Dutchman's onboard radio messages. "Sometimes when he's on the team radio and he makes the odd comment, then ocassionally I get a bit of a problem with that."
The Sky Sports commentator then clarified that sometimes there are 'raw and fresh' situations and at the time, both he and Sky Sports colleague, Martin Brundle, don't know the context when they're on the air.
Verstappen like Vettel? 'Max is a bit of a winner'
Croft then went on to reveal his personal feeling toward Verstappen, claiming he likes the four time world champion, and he has done so since his first F1 appearance in an FP1 in Japan, "Because he's got so much talent and I appreciate talent. Michael Schumacher, we love Michael Schumacher, we love Lewis Hamilton. They're winners, they're champions. We love Sebastian Vettel for all those years, winning four titles as well."
Nevertheless, immediatly after that, he then opined on Vettel's approach to winning and comparing him to Verstappen: "But he did what he had to do to win as well and if his teammate got in the way of that, it was collateral damage as it were, then so be it that didn't matter, he was a winner. And maybe we just have to appreciate that Max is a bit of a winner", concluding that Verstappen should be ultimately celebrated after the four years "he's been at the top," concluded Croft.
