Max Verstappen can be happy with a third place, given the circumstances. Red Bull Racing experienced their worst Friday of 2022 and so the recovery was fine in the United States.

"Yes, but if you look at where we came from, we shouldn't expect miracles," Verstappen replied to Viaplay when asked if a pole position might have been possible in Miami. "Of course, I'm on P1 after that first run in Q3, but I wasn't comfortable in the car at all. We lost precious time yesterday and you pay the price for that now."

Verstappen explains how it went wrong

The Red Bull Racing driver made a rare mistake two minutes before the end of the final qualifying session. He went over the kerbs a little too much, forcing him to abandon his flying lap. How so? "Still finding the limit. Maybe not the perfect balance after all after so little data. In the end we are still competitive," the reigning world champion tries to stay positive.

Verstappen and Red Bull will have to make their move mainly on the straights, while Ferrari will try to keep enough margin towards the back in the twistier second sector. Christian Horner suspects that the DRS will be very powerful again this weekend. Verstappen knows he has to stay close to the Ferrari's. "I hope in the corners we can keep up with them," he said.
