After three Grand Prix in 2022, Charles Leclerc and Ferrari seemed to be on top. Because of two dropouts by Max Verstappen, the gap in the championship was huge and the Monegasque could start defending his big lead. After seven races, however, the flag is flying in a completely different direction. With a retirement in Spain and a disappointing fourth place in Monaco for Leclerc, Verstappen has the lead firmly in his hands.

Nevertheless, this season Ferrari has shown that they are capable of building a car with which they can become champions. Indeed, in qualifying they have been ahead of Red Bull Racing every race. During the races, however, things kept going wrong in recent weeks, so they now have to chase.

Ferrari favourite for the title?

Emerson Fittipaldi explains at Vegasinsider.com that there is no distress yet with the Italian team and that they have all the time they need to get back on track after their strong start to the new era."I would say that Ferrari has been dominating in terms of performance. Ferrari has been the fastest and strongest team this year, but Red Bull has been more consistent throughout the races so far."

The Italians made a dream start in Bahrain by taking a 1-2, while both Red Bulls crashed out. Yet that lead has now disappeared like snow in the sun and with Azerbaijan and Canada on the calendar for the next few weeks, where top speed is important, Red Bull seems to have the better papers. Still, Fittipaldi holds out hope. "In my opinion, they are still the number one contender for the World Championship. More than Red Bull."
