Sergio Perez finished the first free practice session as the fastest. The Mexican driver confirms once again that he is currently completing his laps with a lot of confidence. Max Verstappen was not able to get away with it and had to settle for third place on the street circuit of Baku in FP1.

The Dutchman was three-tenths slower than his teammate who took his first win of the season two weeks ago in Monaco. Charles Leclerc split the two Red Bulls by notching the second time. Carlos Sainz closed in on fourth place, followed by a large gap to the teams from the sub-top and midfield.

In the closing stages, Fernando Alonso managed to set the fifth time. This meant that he moved Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes up to sixth place. George Russell recorded the eighth time. In the W13 of the two teammates, porpoising again proved to be a major problem. The remaining places in the top ten are occupied by Yuki Tsunoda, Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon.
