Red Bull Racing came out with the news a week and a half ago that Sergio Perez will stay longer with the racing stable. According to Christian Horner, it was ultimately not a difficult choice to extend the Mexican's contract, as the driver proved himself amply.

"Pierre [Gasly] is still under contract but timing wasn’t right to bring him back to Red Bull Racing," the team boss told Sky Sports. "heco drove such a great season in 2020, he made it very hard for us to ignore, and he kept banging on my door and pushing and pushing."

Horner gives support to Verstappen as well as Perez

Although for the time being it seems that Max Verstappen will remain the team's first driver, Horner does not want to know anything about preferential treatment for the time being. The Brit believes that both drivers should do their best to fight the battle with Ferrari and that they should especially not focus on each other.

"We need to take the fight to the others and Ferrari because they have looked very strong this season. Checo is Mr. Baku. He has always excelled at this circuit. A great first session from him, he has carried the confidence from Monaco. A great start for him."
