Herbert on Norris overcoming psychological barrier against Verstappen

Herbert praises Verstappen: 'Knows what to do and is more mature now'

Former Formula One driver Johnny Herbert believes that after the Sao Paulo GP last weekend, Max Verstappen would still be the favourite for the drivers' championship even if he had a DNF on a single occasion during the final tripleheader. Still, the Briton praised Lando Norris, saying that the McLaren driver could also make an important step forward already this year.

Compared to how Sunday began for Lando Norris at Interlagos with a pole position, he finished the day with a massive a blow to his championship hopes. Max Verstappen could win the Sao Paulo GP starting from P17 on the grid, and extend his lead in the standings against the British driver.

"Norris just has to continue doing what he is doing. And one non-finish by Max would make a massive change to the championship. Max is still the hot favourite even if that happened," Herbert began to Vision4Sport.

According to the driver, who also worked as an FIA steward last weekend, a more experienced Verstappen could now easy just carry his lead home, to win his worth Formula One title. Currently, the gap stands at 62 points between the two. "Max will not have to win and only finish on the podium. He knows what he has to do and is so much more mature this season."

'Norris made his statement'

Following the race in Brazil last weekend, many talked and wrote about Verstappen making a statement with getting back to winning way for the first time since the Spanish GP. However, Herbert believes Norris has also made one already in 2024, that can help him carry momentum over for next year.

"Norris will go into 2025 knowing he can beat Max, whatever happens in the last three races. That’s a massive psychological barrier he has overcome. He has made his statement and pushed Max to the edge. That’s great because it is exactly what you need to do to an opponent, ruffle his feathers and get under his skin," Herbert concluded.
