Newey reveals: 'That's when I get to work at Aston Martin'
- Ludo van Denderen
Adrian Newey must be eager to get started at Aston Martin. For now, the master designer, who left Red Bull Racing, is sitting at home, serving his gardening leave, and waiting to finally be allowed to begin his next project. There is a date for the Brit to start work: March 2, which Newey himself reveals.
Until then, it is impossible for Newey to secretly do some preparatory work already, as all his tools have been blocked by Red Bull. But the Brit still can, and probably will, be thinking about what he could do with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll's car for the 2025 season.
Once the Brit gets to work for the British team, his main focus will be on 2026, when a major change to the regulations comes into play. Teams have been allowed to work on the cars for that season since 1 January. "So I’ll already be kind of two months behind the curve," Newey says in Autocar's podcast.
Newey needs familiarisation time at Aston Martin
"But in truth, of course, it’s more than that, because not only will I be behind on the looking at those regulations compared to when they’ve come out… With the way the regulations have gone, you really need to be in front of a CAD [computer-aided design] system as well, to be able to understand all the boxes and so forth. They’re so prescribed.," said Newey, who - as mentioned - has yet to do so.
Then there is another small handicap: “But also, it will be getting to know a new team, getting to know all the guys and girls there and how we all work together,” Newey concludes.
