Carlos Sainz says McLaren is comparing itself to the top teams in Formula 1 with the aims of matching and surpassing Ferrari and Mercedes.

McLaren appears to have made a marked improvement from last season and has established itself as a strong midfield contender with just four rounds of the 2019 season complete so far.

The Spaniard and new teammate Lando Norris both insist the car has made progress from last season but admit there are still areas in which the team must improve compared to the pacesetters of F1.

"Pretty much every area I think we still need to improve," Sainz said.

"Because we look at Mercedes, we see where they are, we look at Ferrari, and then you look at the data and you see that every area of the car needs to be improved.

"If we compare ourselves against the midfield, then we only need to improve in little areas to come on top.

"But we are not comparing ourselves against that. We are comparing ourselves to a car that is a second quicker at the moment than us. And that's the target, to improve in every area."
