Fernando Alonso can become a three-time FIA world champion today. Alonso, Nakajima and Buemi need to win the six hours of Spa-Francorchamps and need their Toyota teammates to score zero in order to be crowned champions.

Alonso, who won the Formula 1 world championship in 2005 and 2006, admits he would prefer another world championship over a second Le Mans win. The Spaniard picked up his first Le Mans victory last June which moved him a step closer to achieving motorsport's triple crown.

“I think it’s probably being world champion. Winning Le Mans is obviously amazing if it can happen. But if you have to choose one of the two, I would like to be world champion after winning Le Mans once, [rather] than winning Le Mans two times and losing the world championship," Alonso said in an interview on motorsport.

“But I think if you win Le Mans two times, automatically you are world champion because, in the position we are, it should be enough.”

Sebastian Buemi has already won the WEC world championship, but it would be Nakajima's first world title win.
