These are the plans to create a three-stop strategy at Zandvoort
Drivers, fans and pundits alike have said changes to the Zandvoort circuit are needed ahead of Formula 1's return in 2020. Dutch GP sporting director Jan Lammers has revealed his plans of creating a three-stop strategy.
The pitlane at the circuit is rather short in comparison to other tracks on the current calendar. While that might encourage a two-stop race because the time in the pits is reduced, Lammers hopes to increase the pit entry speed.
"The other big change to enhance overtaking will be the pit entry. That will be made quicker. So we will have pitstops of maximum elapsed time 14 seconds. If we do that we hope that we can create three-pitstop strategies," Lammers told Motorsport.
"And as we all know it's the pitstops and the confrontation of old tyres versus new tyres, that is what creates the overtaking. That's why the philosophy around the pitlane has changed."
The track itself is very challenging because there's no room for error throughout the majority of the lap. There are very little run-off areas around the outside of the tarmac, so one of the main challenges will be to keep it on the black stuff.
"It's a track that is going to be very unforgiving of course. But we've seen that in Baku, and we know that from Monaco, that one mistake and your race weekend can be over," Lammers added.
"It will be a track where it will be crucial that you don't make mistakes. It adds to the unpredictability, and that unpredictability is probably what we want at the moment."
