Fernando Alonso is pleased for Honda after first race win since return to F1
Fernando Alonso was once raging about his Honda engine when they were inside the McLaren car between 2015 and 2017. But after the Japanese engine manufacturer won their first race since their return to Formula 1, Alonso is pleased for the team and hopeful of more wins in the future.
Honda's partnership with McLaren turned out to be a nightmare. Alonso's frustrations grew and he once described his levels of power "like a GP2 engine". Since then, McLaren parted ways to join forces with Renault, while Toro Rosso took on Honda.
After a year at Toro Rosso, Red Bull teamed up with Honda. Max Verstappen's win at the Austrian Grand Prix was their first since Jenson Button's first win in 2006. Alonso admits he was pleased for his former colleagues on his Instagram story.
"It has been a few years now so the engines I guess are very different. We worked in the past as hard as we could and we overcome sometimes the deficit and few penalties for using many engines per season but it was part of the progress probably. Now hopefully it's the first win of many and that will be good for the sport," Alonso said.
