Red Bull Racing's alternative strategy during the second Grand Prix at Silverstone turned out to be the key to Max Verstappen's victory. The Dutchman had great racing speed compared to the Mercedes drivers, which allowed Red Bull to take victory. According to former F1-driver Jenson Button the race went perfectly for Red Bull.
"It really was a flawless race. The speed of Red Bull was just better than Mercedes," he explained at Sky Sports. "However, if Red Bull had had the same strategy as Mercedes, overtaking would have been a lot harder for Verstappen. The alternative strategy turned out to work very well in the end and that paid off in the race".
Red Bull performs more consistently
"Max performed really well this weekend and if you look at Alex Albon's speed in the race, you can see he was also doing well. Because he started in midfield, you get problems with traffic of course, but his speed over the whole race was just good, he also achieved the fastest lap several times", Button looks back on the race. He is clearly positive about Red Bull's progress.
"The car is just performing more consistently and it looks like the car is also doing better on the tyres they have now. It certainly offers good hope for the upcoming races, including Barcelona and Portimao, where tire wear is high", concludes Button.
