Mercedes is in 2020 as in recent years the team to beat and although Verstappen has already written one victory to his name, beating Mercedes seems almost an impossible task. Hamilton has a fairly large lead over Verstappen and Bottas after six races and the Mercedes is generally too fast. However, the championship is not a lost cause yet, says Jan Lammers.

Never give up, always believe

"I think Verstappen has every chance of winning the world title," said the sports director of the Dutch GP in the Formula 1 podcast on NPO Radio 1. "It's just a matter of: how do you reason it? If you reason it rationally based on what you know now, it is very easy to say that he has no chance."

"As a sportsman and sports mentality, it's just a fact that you say: 'no matter how inevitable a defeat may seem, you don't give up'." w

"I think Red Bull and Max, with the whole team, absolutely don't want to give up. They still believe in it. They believe that as long as they find those solutions... that's what you notice everywhere. Getting the best out of yourself and expecting the best from the others. So you have to push each other and they will continue to push each other."

Entire team searches for solutions

The biggest problem is that the RB16 can't go toe to toe with the Mercedes, so people have to search hard in the factory and work on improvements. A task that rests on the shoulders of Adrian Newey, among others. "So also he and his whole team are looking 24/7 for where they can find time and where they can improve."

"And also Honda, who will be coming up with updates soon. I don't know what updates they are, but what I do know is for as long as it is actually possible, they will continue to believe in it," Lammers concluded.
