Horner doesn't see a Gasly return: "That car is easier to drive"
Alexander Albon has been under pressure from the start of the Formula 1 season. The Thai can't keep up with Max Verstappen. Is Pierre Gasly an option again now that he delivers another top performance at AlphaTauri?
Albon must let Renault drivers go
During the Belgian Grand Prix, Albon eventually had to make do with a sixth place. The Thai was able to start from fifth place, but never really came close to Daniel Ricciardo. In fact, after initially some good defending, Esteban Ocon managed to get through to P5 towards the end of the race. What went wrong in Albon's race?
"We felt we had the best chance against Renault on the medium tyre. We managed to get one of the Renaults in a pit-stop, the guys did a faster pitstop than Renault. Unfortunately, the tyre had similar degradation compared to the hard tyre, so Alex wasn't able to hang on to that fifth place. Nonetheless, he did a good job defending hard throughout the Grand Prix," Horner said in an online press release from Red Bull.
No return for Gasly
A year ago it was Gasly who was downgraded by Red Bull, but the Frenchman seems to have recovered now he is in the AlphaTauri. Not only does he beat Daniil Kvyat brilliantly in the qualifying, Gasly also impresses on Sunday. In the race, Gasly drove through the field on an alternative strategy to finish in eighth place.
"Gasly is performing well in the environment at AlphaTauri, but that is a car that is perhaps a bit easier to drive than our Red Bull. Alex performances on Sunday have been strong and he had a good race again today. His defending and overtaking is always strong so I think we're going in the right direction. It is good to see Pierre getting back up to speed, which is why he is still in the Red Bull program, but we are happy with the way things are now," the Red Bull Racing team principal concludes.
