"Hamilton can afford to play poker"
- GPblog.com
Lewis Hamilton has still not renewed his contract. The world champion is still waiting to sign, according to old Formula 1 driver Marc Surer, which is especially annoying for Mercedes. The Germans are more dependent on Hamilton than Surer thinks Hamilton is on them.
The season is already well over halfway through but Hamilton is in no hurry to sign a new agreement with his team Mercedes. That is mainly to the disadvantage of Mercedes, Surer thinks. The Germans have already placed their hopes in Hamilton and may well assume that The Brit will sign, although it will take a long time.
Hamilton can play poker
Surer said to Motorsport-total: "Mercedes is dependent on Hamilton. Hamilton can afford to play poker The team depends on him, the team has to wait for him. We have seen Verstappen beat Bottas a couple of times this year, but beating Lewis Hamilton is much harder. That means that Mercedes depends on Lewis, and that's why he doesn't have to rush."
On the other hand, the question is what options Hamilton has if he doesn't want to sign with Mercedes. The only option then seems to be Red Bull, although that option is very unlikely because Verstappen is there and the Red Bull car is not yet a champion car.
