Vietnam F1 race set to be scrapped due to corruption charges
The Vietnamese Grand Prix has been dropped from the 2021 Formula 1 calendar. F1 were due to visit the country for the first time in April 2020, but the Grand Prix was canceled as a result of the coronavirus.
2021 schedule
The race in Hanoi will not be held next year, reports the BBC. The full schedule for 2021 is expected to be released on Tuesday, but for now it seems like the weekend where the race was due to be held will be left blank.
According to the BBC: "The move has been triggered by the judgment on corruption charges of a key official responsible for the race in Hanoi ".
Racing in Vietnam
Ever since Liberty Media took control of Formula 1, Chase Carey and his team have been keen to push the sport into new places. One of the first places for these plans to be put forward was the race in Vietnam but that will not longer happen.
The city center of Hanoi was set to be transformed into a circuit featuring 22 turns. After much debate, it was one of the highly anticipated new venues for Formula 1 to visit.
In October, it was confirmed that the 2020 running of the Vietnamese Grand Prix was canceled after a new date was unable to be found. Now it seems as if Formula 1 will have to wait many years before visiting the country.
