Red Bull Racing have still not clarified their engine choice for 2022. Honda will then leave Formula 1, but Red Bull want to stay in F1. Which engine will then be behind the Red Bull car?

Red Bull Racing actually wants to remain independent in 2022. They left Renault for Honda precisely because they wanted to have more control over the engine. At Renault it was at the mercy of what Renault wanted for their own team, where at Honda it can be tailored exactly to the wishes of Red Bull and AlphaTauri.

Honda sees difficult situation

Now that Honda is leaving Formula 1, Red Bull have a problem. Actually Red Bull wants to take over Honda's engine, but in 2022 engines can still be developed and that costs Red Bull too much money. According to Christian Horner, a possible freeze on the development of the engines seems to be imminent, but the situation is difficult, Toyoharu Tanabe also sees.

''In Milton Keynes we are now developing the ERS system, but the rest of the engine is being developed in Sakura. It is a tricky situation now that Honda is going out of Formula 1. Talks are still going on, but no decision has yet been made. So we are still looking at what is going to happen with our project," says Honda's F1 project manager to Motorsport.com.
