Mercedes, especially with Lewis Hamilton, has been the dominant factor in Formula 1 for years. Between 1999 and 2004 Ferrari was the dominant team with Michael Schumacher. Former Ferrari team boss Jean Todt dares to take the comparison.

Mercedes or Ferrari?

Ferrari won the world title five times for drivers and six times for manufacturers between 1999 and 2004. Mercedes now holds seven titles for both drivers and manufacturers between 2014 and 2020.

Jean Todt has had a close-up experience of dominant periods. At Ferrari as team boss and in recent years with Mercedes as president of the FIA. "I would say, and I feel, the supremacy, the dominance of Mercedes and Lewis [Hamilton] is bigger than the one we had at the time, with Ferrari and Michael [Schumacher]”, Todt makes the comparison between the two teams on PlanetF1.com.

“On one side you have the very structured organised German team, with an extra talented driver, and on the other side you had one Italian team with a different mentality, a different approach, which became well-structured, well-organised and also a great driver, Michael Schumacher", Todt explains his comparison.

Combination of factors

"The car is very reliable, and apart from the race in Bahrain, which was missed by Lewis, for two years he did not fail to score points in a race, it’s absolutely outstanding", said Todt. “It means reliability, and the driver is not doing mistakes, it is just a combination again.”
