In 2022, some major rule changes are scheduled for Formula 1. Among other things, it is hoped that these will bring the cars closer together and make it easier to overtake again.

2021 Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz hopes that this will make the drivers make more of a difference.

Driver has to make a difference again

"I would like the Formula 1 field to be closer together in the future, and the driver to make a difference. When you get into Formula 1 you quickly find that it is hard to beat someone who is in a car that is three tenths faster. You fight with your teammate for those last two tenths," said Sainz to Motorsport.com.

He continues: "But if someone beats you by a second and a half, you know you can't compete with him. It would be nice if everyone was closer together. I think the FOM, Liberty and the FIA have done well with the rule changes for 2022."

"Hopefully the sport will become more dependent on the driver than on the machine. Then it could be much more fun to watch," Sainz said.
