Brundle on Mercedes and Red Bull: "That rake thing is a bit of a distraction"
- GPblog.com
At Mercedes they believe that Red Bull has an advantage because of the high rake. The new regulations that entered Formula 1 in 2021 seem to play into the hands of the Austrian team, but according to Martin Brundle, Mercedes are only saying that to cover up its own problems.
The Sky Sports commentator told Autosport.com: "I think the rake thing is a little bit of a distraction and I think the Mercedes is not really working that well at the moment."
Despite winning the season opener, it looks as if Mercedes are playing catch-up to Red Bull if early season speed is anything to go by.
It won't be that easy this year though. Mercedes has the restriction that updates have to fall within the tokens and they are also busy developing the 2022 car.
"The regulations mean you can’t just keep throwing new upgrades at it every week like they have perhaps done in the past, but Mercedes will get it together."
Don't underestimate Mercedes
According to Brundle, Red Bull is the dominant force at the moment, but Mercedes is rock solid and they will come out on top. He is careful not to underestimate Toto Wolff's team as the former driver maintains that the Hamilton-Mercedes combination is still the team to beat when it comes to winning the world title.
