Not only the fans are looking forward to the third round in the battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. The two teams of both top drivers are also looking forward to the upcoming fight between the two title contenders this season. Toto Wolff explains that the fight is important for F1.
"We were able to enjoy the fight during the first two races, with glory and with drama. It's starting to become a gripping story and I do expect this to continue throughout the season, Formula 1is still on the rise. The sport is winning fans at the moment because there are not only great fights upfront but also behind," explained Wolff to Speedweek.
Second drivers very important
Wolff knows from the last few seasons how important the second driver in a team can be in winning a championship. This season, he is counting heavily on the skills of Valtteri Bottas in his own battle against Sergio Perez. "The first practice session is a good example of how important it is to have two strong drivers who can give their opinion.”
Bottas' speed was lacking in Imola and that consequently made for a difficult weekend for the Finn, which ended in the gravel pit after a hard crash with George Russell. When Wolff was asked how he resolved it, he was clear. "That remains confidential. I have spoken to both drivers. A driver must always go for the gap if there is one, but must also be able to assess the risk," Wolff concludes.
