Max Verstappen will start from third position on Sunday afternoon in Portimao. The Dutchman has only the two Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas to beat at the start. For the Dutchman it is important to stay close to the Englishman.

The Red Bull Racing driver is, in fact, battling with Hamilton for the top spot in the world championship. Whereas Hamilton was the winner in Bahrain, Verstappen managed to win the race in Imola. His former team boss Franz Tost expects a very exciting title fight this season, he told the Algemeen Dagblad.

Tost sees that Verstappen has made great strides since his time at Torro Rosso. "Of course he has improved. More experienced. More mature. He knows a lot more now. Almost everything he needs to know in Formula 1. And what I love about Max is that you can see he's still progressing, from year to year. Formula 1 is a never ending story. You always get new challenges. New tyres, a new chassis. You have to learn to understand all that again."

Opportunities for Verstappen

This season, Red Bull's car seems to be getting close to Mercedes after years. "So far he has always had the opportunities to fight with them anyway. He showed that in Bahrain. And again in Imola. That's especially great news for Formula 1, the people obviously enjoy this. So I'm looking forward to this weekend and the rest of the year."
