Ferrari will be coming out with a much-improved power unit this season, but the Spa-Francorchamps weekend will, unfortunately, come a little too soon. Some parts are still under development so Charles Leclerc will have to make do with an engine of the current specification in Belgium.

The Monegasque will have to have a new power unit fitted this weekend as the previous one was completely destroyed by a reckless Lance Stroll in the Hungarian GP. It would have been perfect if the new engine could have been used immediately because then Leclerc might have avoided a grid penalty later in the season. That will happen anyway because it has already been determined that Leclerc will switch to the improved specification in a few weeks time. That will be his fourth engine of 2021.

Carlos Sainz received his third engine at the Hungaroring after a problem with the turbocharger during free practice that could not be solved on the spot. Auto, Motor und Sport However, writes that research in Maranello has shown that the component can still be used. Nevertheless, Sainz will also be going to his fourth power unit later in the year and will therefore also have to accept a grid penalty somewhere.

Results promising

Ferrari has one engine development slot left. This is because not all six tokens were used during the winter. Three-quarters of Ferrari's engine package was new, a quarter came from an acquisition from the 2020 season. Expectations regarding the new engine are at least high, because on the test bench the power unit shows great results, according to the German medium.
