Debate | Bottas can show more at Alfa Romeo than at Mercedes
- GPblog.com
The big word is finally out: Valtteri Bottas has to make way at Mercedes and will drive at Alfa Romeo in 2022. Does this mean the beginning of the end of his Formula 1 career, or does the switch offer him opportunities to show more of himself?
Understandably the Finn would have preferred it to be otherwise, but it was bound to happen: He has to make room for the young talent George Russell. Mercedes was a safe haven for him because you can't do better than a dominant Formula 1 team. However, he is constantly overshadowed by teammate Lewis Hamilton, something which has earned him a lot of criticism over the years.
Will a 'new' Bottas emerge at Alfa Romeo?
After all, for a long time, he was the only one who, on paper, had the means to beat the supreme Hamilton, but could never live up to it. Yet the driver who was dubbed the 'perfect wingman' seemed to have come to terms with that.
Nevertheless, Bottas could well flourish in this new chapter of his career. At Alfa Romeo, expectations are lower and he no longer plays a crucial role in the championship. With the breathing space, this would give him, he may just be able to showcase the talent he possesses but was unable to at Mercedes.
