The United States Grand Prix will be held in Austin this weekend. The city in Texas has hosted the American Grand Prix since 2012 and thus the successor of Indianapolis. For the European viewer, a race weekend in America means that you have to stay up late. Read here what time the sessions start in Austin.
Winners in America
In 2012, the American GP returned to the Formula 1 calendar after a four-year absence. The Circuit of the Americas was an immediate success, and Lewis Hamilton won. He continued his success series in America.
In the years that followed, it would appear that it was no fluke. Sebastian Vettel won for Red Bull Racing in 2013, after which Hamilton won four in a row. Then followed one win for Ferrari with Kimi Raikkonen and Valtteri Bottas also managed to pick up a win. The Finn is the latest winner, as the race was cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus.
Verstappen versus Hamilton
In 2021, Hamilton is a big favourite to extend his record number of wins in America to seven, but he's been getting a fair amount of resistance from Max Verstappen this season. At Red Bull, the Dutchman finally has a car he can compete with, which is why he is now also at the top of the championship.
