Lance Stroll caused the first red flag during qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The drivers, therefore, had to fight for track position in the closing stages of Q1.

With four minutes to go, Stroll ended up in the wall, but the Canadian damaged only his front wing and can still continue. However, Stroll hit the wall again moments later on the same lap, causing a red flag.

There was only two and a half minutes left on the board in Q1, causing huge crowds in the pit lane with drivers wanting to get out as soon as possible to set another lap. Especially for the drivers in the danger zone, this was crucial. The top five, which included the Red Bull and Ferrari drivers, called it a day.
